Hi, I’m John Gilley—a portrait, editorial, and nature photographer based in Charlestown, Maryland.

My journey with photography began in high school, but it truly took shape while serving in the Army. I carried a camera with me through Europe and the Middle East, drawn to the moments that felt raw, human, and real. Years later, while teaching SCUBA diving, I rediscovered that pull—this time underwater. Capturing marine wildlife lit a creative fire that’s grown ever since.

Today, I photograph people, places, and wildlife—both in the studio and in the field. I’m especially drawn to candid, documentary-style images that reflect the quiet truth of a moment, whether it's a fleeting expression in a portrait session or the intricate stillness of a forest floor.

I work independently but am always open to creative collaborations—especially with folks who care deeply about storytelling, the outdoors, and honest visuals.

Outside of photography, I’m a certified diver, a woodworker, and a lifelong student of the natural world. I’m curious by nature, hands-on by habit, and happiest when I’m learning something new—usually through a lens.

Thanks for stopping by.
